Tumaini Partners With
Princeton In Africa

Princeton in Africa (PiAf), founded in 1999, places new college graduates in one-year fellowships working with African host organizations, and in 2021 TEC became one of over 100 such partner organizations. PiAf has been an excellent resource matching TEC with fellows to serve as teachers for the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program at Tumaini Secondary School.

Our first PiAf Fellow, Ian Stiehl, arrived in 2022, and he recruited his high school friend, Michael Lans, to join as a second STEM instructor. Together they helped Tumaini become an accredited ICDL (International Certification of Digital Literacy) school. ICDL offers online training modules for both teachers and students to demonstrate competency in a range of digital and programming skills, and ICDL certification is recognized internationally for both students and professional development.

Eloah Makassi (back, center), a PiAf Fellow who completed her one-year fellowship in August, joined teachers Seth Heye-Smith (back, right) and Vivian Tibaijuka (back, left) to lead a Tumaini student delegation to a government sponsored exhibition promoting STEM education. Students presented projects such as an AI-based animal detection system and a healthcare database website. Eloah and the students were featured on a panel and several news outlets. One of a few secondary schools in attendance, Tumaini attracted much positive attention for these projects and our modern resources and teaching style.

Our newest PiAf Fellows, Isabel Masawi (above) and Lyla Archibold-Renwick (below, right), have just arrived at the school. Both are 2024 college grads teaching their first STEM classes and overseeing open computer lab sessions where students can pursue independent projects. Lyla observes, “What surprised me the most is how disciplined the students are when it comes to school. They are learning ten subjects and have an intense schedule but are still smiling at the end of the day.”
