A New School Year at Tumaini Junior School

A New School Year Begins

A New School Year Begins

Tumaini Junior School in Tanzania starts its new school year in January. Unlike schools in the US, students return to classes after a long holiday break, ready to move to a new grade. In the first few days, students are expected to help set up and clean the classrooms and surrounding grounds. This practice helps students take ownership of their learning space and strengthens their connection to the school community.

Tumaini has 60% day students and 40% boarding students. All children sponsored by TEC live on campus. The youngest boarding student is just three years old! Move in day is always busy and chaotic.

Students need to bring their own school supplies from a list given to their parents. Most of the supplies would not surprise you - pencils, notebooks, and backpacks. But, in addition, the boarding students must bring their own bedding, a towel and a pillow along with food items and staples such as toilet paper.

The year kicks off with a formal opening ceremony attended by local dignitaries who give speeches. The event focuses on Tumaini School culture and student expectations, highlighting the importance of these principles for students. This ceremony sets the tone for the rest of the year.
