Fourth Grade at Tumaini

Fourth grade at Tumaini Junior School

Tumaini Student Life:
Grade Four

In this newsletter, we will focus on fourth grade at Tumaini Junior School. This class has 81 students (50% girls) divided into two streams. Most of the students are between nine and ten years old. Six students are sponsored by donors through Tanzania Education Corporation (TEC). 19 students are boarders and 62 are day students.

The curriculum consists of mathematics, English, science and technology, social studies, civics and moral education and Kiswahili. We asked several TEC sponsored students what their favorite subjects are.
Glory: "English is my favorite subject because it helps me read books and it helps me talk to people who speak English."
Debora: "English and math. I like English because I understand the subject well. I like math because it helps me in daily life."
Raphael: "My favorite is science because I want to be a doctor for your heart."

Fourth grade marks the end of the lower primary school. The first half of the year is spent preparing for the Tanzanian National Exam in October. If a student fails the test, they have two more attempts to pass or they are not permitted to proceed to fifth grade, and their schooling must end. Tumaini students perform well, and the Junior School ranks first in the district year after year.

A highlight for the students was a March field trip to the Olduvai Gorge. The students were excited to learn about excavations in the Gorge which have revealed stone tools and the remains of ancient human ancestors.

Fourth grade students become more independent and they begin to participate in the school-wide daily cleaning and washing of their laundry.
There is always time each day to relax in the library!
